Waxing vs. Sugaring: Which Is Best For Brazilian Hair Removal?
Looking to get a Brazilian Wax in Austin TX? Can’t decide whether to pick wax or sugar? Let’s break it down!
Waxing and Sugaring are two different types of hair removal. They are both considered epilation methods, which means they pull the hair from the root-unlike shaving.
Let’s start with wax
Wax usually contains beeswax, rosins, natural oils, and water. There are two types of wax: hard wax and soft wax. Hard wax is thicker and applied in a thicker layer on the skin. It gets its name because it hardens on the skin before it’s removed and does not require a strip. On the other hand, soft wax-often called strip wax-is applied in a thin layer and removed with a strip. Both hard wax and soft wax are applied in the direction of hair growth and removed in the opposite direction. Wax does have to be heated and melted before being applied to the skin. It is applied using a disposable stick and feels warm on the skin. The wax used in my studio is made with minimal ingredients, is hypoallergenic and is gentle on the skin.
Now let’s talk about sugar
You may have heard of sugaring before through a friend or social media. Maybe you’ve seen videos of a glob that looks like honey and caught your attention. Lets break down what sugaring actually is. Sugar is made out of just 3 ingredients: sugar, lemon and water. It is formed into a paste with a gooey consistency that looks a lot like honey. Unlike wax, sugar is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth and removed in the direction of hair growth. Sugar is not melted down and is usually used at room temperature or slightly warm. Instead of being applied with a disposable stick, your esthetician will use a ball of sugar in their hand and use that same piece for the entire area. The sugar is molded into the skin-going against the direction of hair growth-multiple times before being flicked off.
My professional advice:
As an esthetician who has offered both services for years. I think whether you choose waxing or sugaring comes down to personal preference. I don’t think one is better than the other-they’re just different. If you have very sensitive skin, sugaring might work better for you. Emphasis on might. By sensitive skin, I mean skin that becomes very red and hot for more than 24hrs after a wax, or you experience histamine reactions that are uncomfortable and itchy. In some cases, I’ve seen sugaring reduce redness and even eliminate histamine reactions. However, I have also seen clients try sugaring and still experience redness and histamine reactions.
Now, my opinion: sugaring tends to hurt a little more than waxing. Here’s why-sugar has to be molded onto the skin several times before it’s removed. If the hair is long or it’s been more than 4-6 weeks since your last wax, it can tug more on the hair. Sugaring is also done in smaller sections, which can be good or bad depending on the person. If it’s your first time getting a Brazilian or it’s been more than 8 weeks since your last wax, I always recommend waxing at least twice, about 4 weeks apart, before trying sugar. This helps the hair become finer and more sparse, making the sugaring experience more comfortable. This is not to say that waxing won’t hurt, but I believe waxing is quicker and slightly less painful, making it a better option for your first time.
Again, this is just my recommendation! if you would like to start with sugaring, that is totally up to you. I love both sugaring and waxing and have offered both for years. The choice is yours!
